I really like this paragraph from today's "My Utmost For His Highest" by Oswald Chambers:
It is possible to know all about doctrine and yet not know Jesus. The soul is in danger when knowledge of doctrine outsteps intimate touch with Jesus. Why was Mary weeping? Doctrine was no more to Mary than the grass under her feet. Any Pharisee could have made a fool of Mary doctrinally, but one thing they could not ridicule out of her was the fact that Jesus had cast seven demons out of her; yet His blessings were nothing in comparison to Himself. Mary “saw Jesus standing and knew not that it was Jesus”; immediately she heard the voice, she knew she had a past history with the One who spoke. “Master”!
I have known many people who have gone through Bible college/seminary who wouldn't know the voice of the Lord if He shouted at them from the housetops! HE has said THIS in John 10:27:
27 The sheep that are My own hear and are listening to My voice; and I know them, and they follow Me. AMP
HIS sheep are those who are born again by believing that they are sinners who need a Savior, that Jesus paid the price for sin through His death, burial and resurrection, and they have called on HIS Name as Lord and personal Savior. THESE are the ones who know His voice! Have you ever heard that going to church doesn't make you a Christian anymore than sitting in a garage makes you a car? God has NO grandchildren! You are NOT born a Christian. You MUST receive Jesus as Lord and Savior in order to become one. THIS is being Born Again! When you have done these things, then get into a good local church that teaches the Word of God boldly, uncompromisingly, accurately and in love so that you can grow up in Him and in the Word.
