Shalom,

Today I want to speak to you about 1 John 1:9.

If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just (true to His own nature and promises) and will forgive our sins [dismiss our lawlessness] and [continuously] cleanse us from all unrighteousness [everything not in conformity to His will in purpose, thought, and action].

I have heard many differing opinions about what this verse i actually saying. One person teaches that the 'sin' referred to here is our sin before receiving JESUS as Lord and Saviour. That is SO not correct! Remember that this verse is in the New Testament, under the New Covenant, written to born again believers! It says "IF" we will "confess" our sins, HE is faithful and just to forgive us of THOSE sins AND to cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness. All unknown sins! This is speaking of the sins committed by born again believers AFTER the New Birth! The key here is the word "confess". This is the Greek word "homologeo". It means "to speak the same thing", to agree, to admit, to acknowledge. When we acknowledge the sin we have comitted, the the forgiveness that JESUS provided for us on Clavary is applied to our lives again! I especially like the underlined portions above in the Amplified Bible. The BLOOD of JESUS will CONTINUALLY cleanse us of ALL unrighteousness, as we ACKNOWLEDGE when we sin! The choice is ours! Why hold on to unrighteousness when HE has provided such a simple and poweful way to let it go! Let's be DOERS of thie WORD instead of trying to make it say something that it does not say! There is NO FREEDOM in that! Here is Hillsong with "All To Him":

Shalom in Him!
